PUCHONG, Malaysia – August 6, 2024 – Today marks the official launch of the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey to becoming a global leader in the semiconductor industry. This is also one of the successes under the KL20 initiative announced last April. The launch event, held at PFCC in Puchong, brought together esteemed government officials and industry leaders to celebrate this pivotal development. Key attendees included YB Rafizi Ramli, Minister of Economy, YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Menteri Besar of Selangor, and YB Ng Sze Han, Selangor EXCO for Investment, Trade, and Mobility, among other distinguished guests.
In a bid to move from “Made in Malaysia” to “Made by Malaysia,” the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park — in collaboration with the federal government, international semiconductor firms, and venture capitalists — aims to position Malaysia as a potential powerhouse in the global IC design industry. This strategic initiative is designed to leverage Malaysia’s technological capabilities and resources, fostering innovation and advancing the country’s reputation in high-tech manufacturing and design. As highlighted under the 12th Malaysia Plan, high growth high value (HGHV) E&E industry was given emphasis as one of the Big Bold initiatives by prioritising on high value-added activities and quality investments. Through these collaborative efforts, Malaysia is set to become a significant player in the international semiconductor market.
The Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park is actively recruiting skilled candidates with degrees in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Computer Science, offering highly competitive salaries. Entry-level positions start between RM5,000 and RM6,000 for fresh graduates, while individuals with a Master’s degree or extensive industry experience can earn up to RM7,000. Furthermore, Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) is assisting Malaysian and international IC companies in recruiting experienced engineers with 4 to 8 years of experience. These engineers will play a pivotal role in leading the expansion of these companies within the Selangor IC Design Park.
“We are proud to officially launch the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, three months after its initial announcement at the KL20 Summit in April. This remarkable progress within such a short time frame highlights the swift execution and unwavering commitment of all stakeholders involved,” said Yong Kai Ping, CEO of Sidec.
“The establishment of the Malaysia IC Design Park is a testament to our commitment to transforming Malaysia into a global leader in the semiconductor industry. By fostering innovation and collaboration, we aim to create a thriving ecosystem that supports high-value job creation and technological advancement. This initiative aligns with our broader vision of positioning Malaysia at the forefront of the digital economy,” said YB Ng Sze Han.
The Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park, spanning 60,000 square feet and located in PFCC Puchong, was meticulously chosen after an extensive evaluation process among the locations in Klang Valley. This process considered key factors essential for semiconductor companies, such as size, power capacity, building status, office fittings, potential for future expansion, and public transport accessibility. The park is designed to house more than 400 IC Design Engineers from 5 local, international, and JV IC Design companies, including anchor tenants Maistorage, Skyechip, Weeroc, AppAsia ChipsBank, SensoremTek Sdn Bhd and supported by ecosystem partners such as BlueChip VC, ARM Holdings, Cadence Design System, Synopsys, Siemens EDA and Keysight and Shenzhen Semiconductor Association.
The ceremony was officiated by YB Rafizi Ramli and YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancement in Malaysia. During the event, ecosystem partners and tenants of the IC Design Park were introduced, showcasing the collaborative efforts that will drive the semiconductor industry forward. Additionally, industry leaders made significant announcements, providing insights into the future direction and opportunities within Malaysia’s semiconductor landscape.
The Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park is set to transform Malaysia’s semiconductor sector by providing state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive support systems to foster innovation and growth. This initiative aims to elevate Malaysia’s position on the global stage and drive the production of “Made by Malaysia” semiconductor products.
