SHAH ALAM, 29 JULY 2020 – The Selangor E-Bazar Raya Campaign, an exclusive collaboration between the Selangor state government and e-commerce platform Shopee which lasted for two months from 4 May to 4 July 2020, was completed. The State Government has channelled almost RM1 million in the form of voucher benefits to Selangor merchants on this platform. The direct revenue from this RM1 million has successfully generated sales revenue of RM11.7 million, indicating a Return of Investment (ROI) of 12 times over the initial amount.
Moreover, through research and market findings of the Selangor State Government, it was noted that this initiative has generated about RM341.5 million in a ripple effect to the merchants. These include economic, socio-economic and branding effects that have created positive impacts towards the merchants including to their offline operations, job creation, online customer traffic, publicity, social media hype and more. This is an increase of 341% of the total of RM1 million voucher allocated by the Selangor State Government.
The initiative which lasted for two (2) months from May to July 2020, attracted 8,400 e-commerce traders, of which 6,400 were conventional businesses while 2,000 were existing online businesses.
This participation recorded a much higher figure than the initial target of 3,000 conventional traders owning an e-commerce platform and 2,000 existing e-commerce traders, thus proving the mounting success of this progressive initiative.
The initiative was to help Small, and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Micro Businesses in Selangor to recover their businesses as they were affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The Selangor State Government has channelled an allocation of RM1 million in the form of a discount voucher for this campaign. In contrast, e-commerce platform, Shopee directed more than 1 million packages and matching resources in addition to the RM15 million package that was announced earlier to help SME traders to sell in the platform.
This press conference also witnesses the presentation of certificates of appreciations to the Selangor traders who received the highest sales during the initiative. The best-selling categories throughout the implementation of this initiative are groceries and pets, mobile and gadgets, baby and toys, health and beauty, Muslimah fashion as well as home and living.
Other entrepreneurial businesses that benefited from this initiative are the State’s microcredit Hijrah Selangor scheme, PKNS PREC, SITEC and Agro Selangor.
Based on this excellent performance, the Selangor State Government will continue to invest and empower the SME ecosystem as these traders are the real backbone of the industry that creates values and wealth for all.
Selangor Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari was present at the press conference with the Chairman of Standing Committee for Investment, Industry & Commerce and SME, Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, Chief Executive Officer of Invest Selangor, Dato’ Hasan Azhari Hj. Idris, Chief Executive of Selangor Information Technology & E-Commerce Council (SITEC), Mr Yong Kai Ping and Head of Public Policy and Government Affair of Shopee Malaysia, Mr Leeroy Ting Kah Sing.
