The United Kingdom Mega Tech Mission 2017 brought 50 leading tech companies to Malaysia, each seeking to expand their business reach, as well as to explore new tech deals with local companies.
The delegation was in Selangor for the 9th and 10th of October, before heading down to Johor on the 11th of October.
During a networking dinner on the 10th, held at Istana Selangor, Chief Minister of Selangor, the Right Honourable Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin bin Ali, noted that His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Selangor places his hopes of greater cooperation between Malaysia and the UK on the mission, following his meeting with His Royal Highness the Sultan earlier that day.
“I strongly believe that you have made the right decision to come to Malaysia, especially Selangor, to explore new opportunities for our economic growth,” said the chief minister during his address at the dinner.
Other notable guests included the Honourable Dato’ Teng Chang Khim, Senior Executive Councillor for Investment, Industry & Commerce, SME and Transportation, Victoria Marguerite Treadell, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, the Felicitous Dato’ Hasan Azhari bin Haji Idris, Chief Executive Officer of Invest Selangor Bhd, and Dr Fahmi Ngah, Chief Executive Officer, Selangor Economic Advisor.
This mission to Malaysia follows previous successful runs in Japan and South Korea. The delegates came from companies that hail from a wide range of disciplines in the technology sector, such as Big Data, virtual and augmented reality, cyber-security, e-Commerce, FinTech, IoT, robotics, telecommunications, and Smart City solutions.
Collaborative partnerships between the UK Department for International Trade Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), signed last year, bore fruitful results, leading to UK foreign direct investments into Malaysia rising by 54% to RM270 million in 2016, specifically within the technology sector.
